Tormets Oy is one of the main equipment suppliers to Sibanye-Stillwater’s Keliber lithium project in Central Ostrobothnia that will support the green transition.

Tormets Oy has signed a contract with Sibanye-Stillwater’s Keliber lithium project for supplying material processing systems to the lithium refinery in Kokkola and the concentrator in Päiväneva in the municipality of Kaustinen.

The delivery includes 14 belt conveyors in the concentrator zone and 10 belt conveyors in the lithium refinery zone. The conveyor systems have a combined total length of 1,350 metres.

The delivery also includes belt feeders, weighing solutions and a material storage silo for the lithium refinery. The silo ensures efficient and reliable material transport in the facility.

The equipment will be used to transport crushed ore in the concentrator zone and transport lithium concentrate inside the lithium refinery.

Tormets Oy is supplying the design, manufacture, installation and commission of the equipment as an end-to-end delivery. The supplied equipment will benefit the client through energy savings, a high availability rate, and a long equipment life cycle. The equipment has been designed and built to conform to the demands of the clean transition.

“This is a really significant project. One of our goals at Tormets is to support the green transition. We do this by designing and delivering sustainable, energy-efficient material handling systems with long life cycles. They allow our clients to keep the environmental impacts of manufacturing to a minimum,” says Antti Valta, CEO of Tormets.

The lithium refinery equipment is being delivered by the end of 2024, while the delivery of the concentrator will continue to the start and middle of 2025.

The contract will provide jobs worth 60 full-time equivalents (FTE), spread over 2024 and 2025.

“The Keliber lithium project means a lot of work not just for Tormets, but also for other companies in the coastal Lapland area. After this contract ends, we want to continue working with Sibanye-Stillwater’s Keliber lithium project. We’d like to offer long-term maintenance contracts to ensure maximum equipment uptime for their entire life cycles,” Antti Valta says.

“The Keliber lithium project is an excellent match for our goals here at Tormets Oy, which are to strive for a brighter future by enabling environmentally-friendly and profitable manufacturing,” says Kari Rantamaa, Chair of the Board.
